PAGE TO STAGE

Linking literacy with live theater

Using the stories that inspire our popular stage productions (such as Dragons Love Tacos and The Very Hungry Caterpillar) or books & themes that are personal to your classroom, students learn to adapt stories for the stage as they read a book and then dramatize several key scenes that tell the story. Those scenes will then be staged into a showcase for a final class sharing. In the process, students demonstrate reading comprehension, and work collaboratively, while meeting standards in literature and writing—and having fun! Through theatre and improv games, this workshop series also helps students learn and practice collaboration, and Social/Emotional Learning skills in alignment with CASEL competencies.

About the Residency

  • Each residency includes:

    • A planning session with classroom teachers to choose a text, determine learning goals, and familiarize teachers with Page to Stage vocabulary and teaching methods.

    • Comprehensive teacher guide provides sample activities to ensure learning continues long after OCT instructors leave the building

    • A six-week, in-class residency, 50-55 minute hands-on sessions with students. The residency culminates in a final class showcase: a great opportunity to invite parents, reading buddies, or other members of your school community to celebrate your students’ work.

  • Page to Stage is aligned with Common Core State Standards in Language Arts, and CASEL competencies and is designed for students in grades K–8.

  • During this residency, students will:

    • use communication and social skills to interact effectively with others

    • gain a deeper understanding of teamwork

    • learn to collaborate with peers more effectively

    • learn key storytelling elements including critique, story analysis, plot, character development, storyboard, and presentation

    • learn to represent narrative visually and through use of dialogue

    • develop basic acting skills related to character analysis and Reader’s Theater, including reading aloud from a script and following stage directions and blocking notes

  • Six weeks, each weekly session lasts 50–55 minutes.

  • The cost for the Be YourSELF program is $2,700 for the first classroom and $2,160 for each additional classroom. Because we believe that theatre skills are life skills and all children deserve access to arts education, in-school programming now offers a tiered pricing structure for schools with a financial need. Please complete this form to request a booking. If you have questions or need assistance, please contact our Education Programs Coordinator, Nick Condon

  • To request Page to Stage at your school please click here or the button above. Upon completing a booking request our Education Programs Coordinator will be in contact to schedule your sessions.

A one-hour planning meeting will be scheduled in advance of the first session with a school representative (ideally the homeroom teacher) and the OCT Teaching Artist to discuss unique classroom goals and determine the theme for any source/creative material that OCT will provide. Once a schedule has been confirmed you will be invoiced. Please call 503-228-9571 with any questions!

  • Refunds for in-school programming will be provided with 2 weeks notice prior to the first classroom session. Refunds will not be provided with less than 2 weeks notice. Full payment is required prior to the first planning meeting or no later than 2 weeks prior to the start of the program. In the event a payment has not been made at least 2 weeks prior to the first class start or a planning meeting has not been scheduled, OCT reserves the right to cancel the booking request.

In the event OCT needs to cancel a full classroom residency, full refunds will be provided. If an individual class session needs to be cancelled by OCT or the school, OCT will make an effort alongside the school to re-schedule the class session. If re-scheduling a class session is not possible, OCT will provide a refund for the value of the class session(s) that were missed. Any changes to residencies made by the school must be requested at least 2 weeks prior to the first class date.
