I am… me!

LGBTQ2SIA+ Student Success Program

High school students

This six-week curriculum program encourages students to explore their own unique identity through a series of storytelling exercises.

Developed with support from the Oregon Department of Education

The second, a workshop program aimed at LGBTQ2SIA+ identified, questioning, and allied high school students and delivered by OCT teaching artists and volunteers, will utilize digital storytelling segments sharing intergenerational stories and artwork by LGBTQ2SIA+ artists to guide discussions. Curricula and activities will be focused on LGBTQ2SIA+ experience, history, the intergenerationally expressed resilience of the queer community, discussions of the intersectional challenges faced by queer youth of color and disabled queer youth, and follow-up resources and activities

Educational Goals

Through this workshop series students will learn:

  • Qualities that help them achieve personal and academic goals

  • How to manage stress and difficult emotions

  • How to make friends and build a strong community

  • Healthy ways to resolve conflicts

The development Process

The development of this curriculum program was a collaboration between teens, teaching artists, and educators, with the goal of creating curriculum that was impactful and meaningful while also being flexible and customizable for each individual classroom and participant. Watch this short video to learn more about the unique development process.

About the Program

  • There are many factors that cause stress in people’s lives: new experiences, difficult tasks, even fun and exciting activities! In this workshop students will explore what causes stress and how it affects their bodies. They will also learn the power of having a positive mindset when learning new skills or exploring new situations. Lastly, they will learn simple mindfulness tools that help reduce stress and promote calmness and focus.

  • Students will practice being supportive to each other. They will learn how empathy can strengthen their relationships and build strong communities, as well as how to resolve conflict in constructive ways.

  • When dealing with difficult interpersonal issues, having skills to view the situation objectively and understand different perspectives can be helpful in building a strong community. Through games and drama activities, students will develop the abilities to recognize the feelings and perspectives of others.

  • Students will learn how emotions can affect their actions, and why it is important to be able to stop and think before acting impulsively. They will explore situations in which strong emotions may occur, and how to use mindfulness techniques to manage their behaviors.

See it in action

As part of the development process OCT worked with students, faculty, and teaching artists to implement the curriculum guide. These digital stories were shared at a special preview event on June 16, 2023.
