OCT alumni talk about how OCT has impacted their lives.

Oregon Children’s Theatre and Artistic Director Stan Foote have been awarded the 2009 Celebrate Literacy Award from the Portland Council of the Oregon Reading Association. Oregon Children’s Theatre and Stan Foote share the award with Seth Lewelling Elementary School 2nd grade teacher Nancy Wheeler; Tualatin Elementary School Literacy Specialist/Title 1 Coordinator Christy Shaver; and Madison High School Librarian/Media Specialist Nancy Sullivan.

The Celebrate Literacy Awards are presented annually to individuals or organizations that have made significant contributions to literacy in Oregon; and have historically gone to teachers, librarians, and other school staff. Oregon Children’s Theatre and Stan Foote strive to deepen students’ relationship with books by bringing stories to life on stage, and selecting plays with literacy at their core. Additionally, OCT works with authors to adapt their novels for the stage on a regular basis, making them a national leader in the development of new work for children’s theater.

“We are honored to be presented with this award and be to be included in the company of teachers and librarians who support reading among young people,” said Stan Foote.

Oregon Children’s Theatre’s 2009-2010 season features five plays based on books, including the world premiere sequel to Holes—Small Steps, which author Louis Sachar is adapting for the Oregon Children’s Theatre stage.
